Fishing and Consulting...

Maybe it’s just me, but when I start a new activity I tend to see similarities in other things I do.  I just took up fly fishing – yes the spiritual, mystical, time honored activity of trying to outwit something with a brain the size of a raspberry. 


As I was struggling to tie the tippit (terminology is important is every activity) that is as fine as my hair – to the fly, I realized I had been fly fishing for the past 25 years.  Except in my case, I called it consulting.  Flashes started to go off.  In consulting – as in fly fishing -  you need to:

* have the right fly – in my case training programs and solutions
    
* know what fish are out there – in my case the customer
    
* understand how they behave – in my case their needs, problems, issues, and concerns
    
* choose the right fly – in my case what are the real issues that you can address
    
* have the right presentation of the fly – in my case you have to ask the right questions
    
* have patience, fish will eat when they want and what they want – in my case you have to be with the right person at the right time with the right stuff.

It’s too early to tell if I will become one of the premier fly fisherman, but I can see how this discipline will help with my day job.  Just got to get out early to catch the big ones!  It's kind of like that in consulting.
